Barry F.T. Bolker, Ph.D., CFP

Dr. Barry Bolker assists you with all aspects of retirement planning.

He strives to understand the lifestyle you want after you finish your full-time career. Using both commercial software and proprietary spreadsheets, he can make projections for your expenses and income throughout your retirement years. This allows him to estimate your retirement savings goal and to determine the resources and assets you need in order to live that lifestyle. His analysis includes all assets – cash, savings, rental property, regular brokerage accounts, and retirement accounts (IRA, 401k, 403b, etc.), as well as Social Security, pension, and other income.

Working with Dr. Bolker will help you answer questions such as:

• When can I retire?
• Will I have enough money to retire, and how long will my money last?
• What do I need to do to have a financially successful retirement?

During your working years, he helps you determine the asset amount you will need in order to support your desired retirement lifestyle.  He advises you regarding how much you should be saving for retirement and about proper asset allocation and diversification. He works with you to monitor your assets and adjust your planning as your needs change over time.

At the point of retirement, he helps you evaluate your withdrawal options and make appropriate decisions regarding payout choices if you have pension plans or annuities. Because both retirement and the retirement planning process are dynamic, he will work with you throughout your retirement to monitor your withdrawals and your portfolio performance in order to secure your continued financial well-being.

Retirement Specific Analysis

Retirement PlanDr. Bolker can also perform a special evaluation that provides a detailed examination of your retirement scenario. Based on your lifestyle data, this Retirement Specific Analysis looks at your current living expenses in several broad categories. Typically, this includes:

• Taxes
• Basic Living Costs (Necessities)
• Health Care
• Leisure & Discretionary

In this process, he can apply separate rates of inflation to each category and also help you estimate periodic adjustments of your budgetary expenses (which reflect changing needs as you age during retirement). The result is a projection of your estimated living expenses, by year, throughout retirement. After accounting for income from Social Security, pensions, and other sources, he is able to provide you with an estimate of the total amount of money you will need to fund your retirement. Moreover, he provides you with a summary analysis of your current assets and discusses what actions are needed to achieve your retirement goals. This analysis also indicates the asset amounts needed at selected ages prior to retirement and indicates necessary savings required, based on risk-appropriate rates of return, to ensure that you have the retirement you desire.
